As with the history of many towns nestled in the Santa Cruz Mountains, Saratoga was founded with the construction of a Sawmill in the 1850’s, just before the Goldrush drastically transformed the region’s landscape and culture. Believe it or not, Saratoga was named after the lake town in Upstate New York after a series of name changes to the city since it was founded. This bedroom community has a small-town feel, although with plenty to do and see, from the beautiful natural surroundings to restaurants to local wineries. Many of the Santa Cruz Mountains wineries have tasting rooms right in downtown, making for a convenient wine tasting destination.
